Grey Rock for visitors from next door

Grey Rock Casino by Edmundston sits on the Canada-US border, 2.3 km in a straight line from Madawaska, Maine, and 32.0 km from Dégelis, Québec. All year the casino's clock runs one hour ahead of both towns, and the ground it sits on is Madawaska Maliseet First Nation land.

Who lives next door

On the Maine side, Madawaska lies 2.3 km from Grey Rock in a straight line. Fort Kent is 25.1 km and Presque Isle 80.1 km, also in a straight line.

Across the Québec line, Dégelis sits 32.0 km in a straight line. Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac is 55.5 km off and Rivière-du-Loup 105.6 km. Each figure joins two map points rather than following a road, and none of them implies a travel time.

Hours and the clock

Grey Rock opens seven days a week, on Atlantic time. Sunday through Thursday, play runs from 10 AM until midnight. Friday and Saturday bring a later close: 10 AM to 2:30 AM. The French page gives the same hours.

All of Maine keeps Eastern time, Madawaska and Fort Kent included. Dégelis, Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac and Rivière-du-Loup lie west of 63 degrees West, so they keep Eastern time as well. A phone on Eastern time reads one hour earlier than the clock on the casino floor. That gap holds all year, since both sides change their clocks on the same Sundays.

Holiday hours are not given here; check them on Grey Rock's own site.

At the door

Grey Rock admits guests 19 and older. Every guest needs a valid government-issued photo ID, and ID is checked for anyone who looks 25 or under. Nothing on the casino's pages is aimed at visitors from the United States: no list of accepted foreign documents and no currency notice. Border-crossing rules are outside the scope of this guide.

Children come with a rule of their own. Leaving a child unattended anywhere on Grey Rock property can bring a ban of up to 5 years.

What is inside

There are no live table games at present. During floor hours, the hybrid electronic tables deal Baccarat, RouletteX, Stadium Blackjack, Stadium Three Card Poker and a variant of Texas Hold'em. A smoking section holds over 20 slot machines. Published slot totals differ, so none is given. The bingo hall is currently closed.

Valley View Restaurant, with seating for more than 150, opens each day between 4 PM and 10 PM. Fiddlehead Café + Lounge serves meals Monday to Thursday 11:30 AM to 8 PM, Friday 11:30 AM to 9 PM. Saturday meals run from 12 PM to 9 PM, and Sunday meals from 12 PM to 8 PM. At Fiddlehead, the bar serves from 11 AM to 12 AM Sunday to Wednesday, and from 11 AM to 2:30 AM Thursday to Saturday.

An enclosed pedway links the casino to the Quality Hotel. It has 15 heated garages for snowmobilers and direct ATV and snowmobile trail access. A set area of the parking lot is reserved for RVs.

Totem Rewards gives 1 point per $1 on slots, 1 per $10 on hybrid tables. Grey rocks on the surrounding mountains gave the casino its name. A 40-foot totem pole of Glooscap stands at the entrance.
